Article: The Value of Tulips

The Value of Tulips

Today we're going to travel back in time to 17th-century Holland, when tulips became so valuable that they could be worth more than gold!

It all started with 'Tulip Mania,' a period when the fascination with tulips turned into an actual craze. People paid fortunes for a single tulip bulb, and prices reached unimaginable levels. Imagine! A tulip could cost as much as a house.
But like all bubbles, Tulip Mania burst. Despite that, the love for flowers in Holland did not disappear; instead, it transformed.
This passion gave rise to the famous flower auctions, which began in small local markets and evolved into a global system that moves millions of euros daily. Today, the flower auction in Aalsmeer, near Amsterdam, is the largest in the world. Here, every day, over 20 million flowers are auctioned and sent to all corners of the planet, 365 days a year!
Dutch auctions are the heart of the global floral industry. Here, flowers go through a dizzying process in which buyers bid for the best lots in a matter of seconds.
So, the next time you see a tulip, remember that you are looking at a flower that, in its time, was more valuable than gold, and that continues to be part of a Dutch tradition that has flourished for centuries.
