English Roses: Origin, Cultivation, and Why They Are Floral Design Favorites

Discover what English roses are, their origin with David Austin, how they are grown, and why they are ideal for luxury floral arrangements at La Violetera.

What are English roses?

English roses are recognized worldwide for their romantic shape, abundant petals, and deep aroma. Unlike many modern roses, they retain the charm of old gardens, combining classic beauty with resilience and prolonged blooming.

They are not common roses.
They are flowers created with intention, patience, and a clear philosophy: to recover the emotion of the original rose.

The origin of English roses and the vision of David Austin

The history of English roses begins in Shropshire, England, in the mid-20th century. It was there that David Austin, a farmer and gardening enthusiast, decided to change the course of modern roses.

His goal was clear: to unite the shape and fragrance of old roses (gallicas, damasks, and bourbons) with the resilience and repeated blooming of modern roses.

After years of cross-breeding and testing, a new category was born:
the now well-known English Roses.

How are English roses cultivated?

Cultivating an English rose is a slow and careful process.

  • They are primarily propagated through selected grafting or cuttings.

  • From planting, the plant can take between 2 and 3 years to reach its peak.

  • During that time, it develops strong roots and a structure capable of supporting large, fragrant flowers.

They bloom mainly from spring to summer, and many varieties re-bloom in autumn, provided the climate is temperate and care is adequate.

English roses around the world

Although born in England, today English roses are cultivated in different countries.
The original cuttings are distributed to specialized nurseries around the world, following strict quality standards, to preserve their aroma, shape, and character.

Every English rose that blooms, regardless of the country, maintains the same origin and the same philosophy: beauty is not rushed.

Why use English roses in floral design?

In floral design, English roses provide:

  • Natural volume and elegant opening with beautiful petals that open each day.

  • Soft and romantic texture

  • Enveloping aromas like no other rose.

  • A timeless sense of luxury

They are ideal for sophisticated arrangements, weddings, special celebrations, and designs where the flower is the protagonist.

At La Violetera, we choose English roses because they represent our approach to floral design:
flowers with history, cultivated with patience, and designed with intention.

Every arrangement begins long before it is placed in a vase.
It begins with the selection of the flower, its origin, and its growth process.

At the flower shop La Violetera, we believe in flowers that have a story,
in those cultivated with patience,
and that bloom with intention.

That's why we choose English roses:
because true beauty,
like good floral design,
takes its time.
