Article: Flowers at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

Flowers at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

Today, on La Violetera's blog, we'll tell you a little about the deep meaning behind the bouquets of flowers received by Olympic medal winners in Tokyo.

The flowers chosen to be part of these bouquets have great significance, as they grew in regions of Japan that were devastated by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident involving three reactors on March 11, 2011. Approximately 18,000 people lost their lives in the Iwate, Fukushima, and Miyagi regions. 10 years later, recovery from the damage continues.

In Fukushima, a non-profit organization was created to cultivate flowers (Lisianthus) with the hope of lifting the spirits of the region.

In Miyagi, parents who lost their children in the tragedy planted sunflowers on the mountainside where they had tried to take shelter from the tsunami.

Iwate is known for its production of gentians, an indigo blue flower of the same shade as the color used in the emblem of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

These 3 types of flowers were chosen to convey a special message full of symbolism and hope.

These beautiful arrangements, full of vibrant flowers, fragrance, and above all, the symbolism they represent, make them a perfect gift for the winners of these medals at the Olympic Games.
