They love water
The name "Hydrangea" comes from the Greek hydor (water), because they are plants that require a lot of moisture to grow and produce those enormous flower heads we admire so much.

They grow best in cool, rainy climates
That's why we see them looking spectacular in places like Holland, England, France, northern Spain, or some mountainous areas of Mexico. Constant rain and mild temperatures favor their growth.

Their size depends on growing conditions
A well-hydrated hydrangea grown under optimal conditions can produce much larger and more abundant flowers than a plant subjected to water stress.

The soil "colors" the flowers
Blue hydrangeas typically grow in more acidic soils, while pink tones appear in more alkaline soils. It is one of the few cases in nature where the color of the flower is so closely linked to soil chemistry.

Many varieties start in soft tones and evolve during the season towards more intense colors or even aged green and burgundy tones, which are highly valued in floral design.
