A Chat with Margarita Chavarría - Florist

Today on La Violetera's blog, we chat with Margarita Chavarría, who has been a florist for 17 years.

She currently works at La Violetera creating arrangements, decorating events, and teaching classes at our floral design school.

 

How did you start as a florist?

I was invited to help at a flower shop on Valentine's Day. I only started by helping put oasis in the bases, and in March, they asked me if I wanted to work there. I said yes, and I've been working with flowers ever since.

I started by doing simple things, whatever they asked me to do, and little by little, I developed my creativity.

 

What do you like most about being a florist?

Creating arrangements and new things. I like it when a client comes with an idea of what they need, and then I start creating. It fills me with satisfaction when I finish an arrangement and say, "Wow, look what I managed to do," and most importantly, that the client likes it and leaves happy.

 

What tips can you give us to start creating an arrangement?

• You have to learn to visualize to create. See the outline of what you're going to do, where it will be, and how you're going to do it.

• I am one of those people who needs to really look at the arrangement, because sometimes there's something that doesn't look good and makes the whole arrangement look bad. (Perhaps due to the appropriate proportion or color combination.) So it's very important to learn to observe. It helps me a lot to step back to look at the arrangement.

• Patience, to make a flower arrangement, like all things, you have to practice.
• Learn to combine and, above all, visualize the arrangement; that will help you know what to remove or add to make the arrangement beautiful.

What's the hardest part of your job?

Sometimes the hardest part is interpreting what the client wants or is looking for. But when you love your job as much as I do, you make an extra effort to achieve it.

For me, making an arrangement isn't complicated; it's a matter of practice and having the patience to do it.

 

How long have you been working at La Violetera, and what do you like most about working there?

I've been working at La Violetera for 7 years.

Something extremely important to me is the work environment.

My colleagues and my boss are always on the same page, and we know how to listen to each other. My boss listens to me super well.

In this job, we have great communication, and they always listen to what I have to say.

Something I didn't like at first was being in the courses.

Then I realized it was something I loved to do. At La Violetera, I found another passion, which is teaching. I love teaching.

Seeing the students happy, learning, and satisfied fills me with satisfaction.

I love seeing the students when they achieve something and are filled with satisfaction.

 

 

What advice can you give to those who want to be florists?

If you just do it for the sake of it or copy, you'll never become a great floral designer.

So don't be afraid to create your own style.

Remember that it will be difficult at first, but if you keep practicing, have dedication, and keep believing in yourself, the rest will come easy.
