5 fun facts about tulips

Today, on La Violetera's blog, I'll be telling you a bit about this wonderful flower, the tulip.

What does its name mean?

Since they originated in Iran and Afghanistan, these special flowers began to be used as decorative elements in turbans, giving them the name Tulip, which means turban.

Their variety is astonishing!

Tulips can be divided into about 150 species, but there are over 3,000 varieties of the flower, both naturally occurring and genetically cultivated, worldwide.

New varieties of tulips are regularly created, but it takes at least 20 years to go from the initial stages of cultivation to the flower shop.

Did you know they are edible?

Like many other flowers, tulips are edible. During World War II, tulips were eaten due to a lack of other food. The flowers can be used to replace onions in many recipes, and even to make wine.

The most expensive flower.

At one point in history, tulips were the most expensive flowers in the world.

In the 1600s, tulips were the most valuable flowers, costing almost 10 times what an average person earned in a year.

The land of tulips.

The Netherlands is the largest producer and exporter of tulips worldwide, cultivating and exporting almost three billion bulbs every year.

Now you know a little more about tulips!
